Blog Assignment due at the end of exam week

For your last Minecraft blog post you should detail the following:

Explain your lesson/world. What does it consist of?

What is the educational objective?

What went into building it? Redstone, cheats? What new tricks or skills did you learn in Minecraft?

Lastly, what research went into creating your lesson?

Remember, your post should be reflective and thorough.  This should be your most extensive post to date; there are many questions to answer.

Lesson with Mrs. Deller

Take a screen shot of your work at the start of the period and the end. Add them to your Google Doc proposal and describe the work you completed for the day.

Make sure whoever created your world logs in as a single player with minecraft - not minecraftedu. You then need to open the work via lan. The rest of the group will also log in with minecraft, but they will choose multiplayer.

The other group is off to a fantastic start. Work hard today.

Minecraft blog post

Having had a week to explore Minecraft in both creative mode and survival mode, do you feel there is a place for Minecraft in the classroom?  Is one mode better than the other if the goal is educational? When considering the 4Cs, does Minecraft support and nurture any of these more than the other? Each question should be answered thoroughly on your blog.

Minecraft and the sub.

Go to my handout folder on Optimus (command + k from finder). It will be under Middle School and then my last name.  Drag the Minecraft folder onto your desktop. This is the same one I installed on the Macbook Airs. Open it and follow the same procedures to install that you did last time. Here is the server IP address: 172.16.217.40

Build something amazing and make sure you put a sign in front with your name(s) on it.  You may work with someone.

Last week to work on projects and presentations

One more week to work on your project, as next week your presentations will be due. Please keep in mind that they must contain the following:

  • A visual overview of your 3D model (all four sides and inside if necessary)
  • Explanation of some of the tools and techniques you learned during the project
  • An explanation of how each of the 4Cs played a role in your project. This cannot be merely a mention of the words; it needs to be reflective and thoughtful

Blog Posts

Make sure you are keeping up with your blog posts. Many of you are neglecting this important aspect of this course.

Finding answers

Now that we've started thinking about what we want to create in SketchUp, some questions about how to do it will undoubtedly arise. Being able to use the internet to find answers is an invaluable tool that you'll use over and over for this project. For today's blog post, I'd like for you to paste the link to a video tutorial that answered one of your questions. Explain what you learned from it and how you'll apply that knowledge to your project specifically. We'll look to pool our resources to create a database of helpful tutorials and topics as the project progresses.

The Inn

Last class period you were all introduced to the innovation incubator, or The Inn for short. We spent the period discussing the furniture, the space, and my vision. Today, I would like for you to create a new blog in blogger that will track your learning in this space over the course of the year. You'll need to create a header in Photoshop that represents you as an autonomous learner. Lastly, you'll need to write your first blog post that details how you foresee this space being utilized to maximize communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Please copy and paste your blog url here.

MaKey MaKey projects

We are in the home stretch finishing out the year with a project using MaKey MaKey.  Designed by two graduate students at MIT, MaKey MaKey essentially replaces the keyboard and uses electrical currents to activate the keyboard functions and the mouse. The creativity is flowing as evidenced by the photos below. It's been a great year!

Today's assignment for B day students

Complete your dream home and upload it to my dropbox when you are finished today. I am postponing the due date for your AR project until next Tuesday - so do not fret. Today's lesson will give you an intro to 3d modeling with Google SketchUp. If you are with me next year in Computer 7 we'll be doing more of this. Watch the video to get the basics and then let your imagination run wild. Note: Your grade will be based on the creativity and structure of the home and not the items you put in it or around it.

Augmented Reality Project

This project that we have embarked upon is a joint effort of two classes: art and technology. The students will be taking a 2D painting they created with Mrs. McMillan and adding a deeper dimension to it through augmented reality. Their painting will serve as a trigger image that takes the viewer deeper into the art. Students are given the freedom to decide where this journey will go, and I for one am excited to see where it will lead. To access this other dimension we will be using the Aurasma app that can be downloaded for free.

YOU NEED EARBUDS TODAY! Go get them, please.

For today's lesson you will be setting up a blog using Google's Blogger. Once you have signed in watch this video and follow along. You do not need to use the exact widgets that she uses, but you'll need to add a few. Later on (not today) we'll be adding the work you have created this year. Be creative and make it your own. I would have created my own video, but my throat and voice are kaput.

Double click video to make it full screen.
